Channel Evolution Model - 3D
Channel evolution sequences are proposed to physically explain the general trend in channel adjustments following a disturbance that causes the river to have more energy and degrade more sediment. In this updating graphic, the channel then incises and deepens to abandon the active Floodplain. After deepening, the over-steepened banks collapse, causing a widening of the channel. The shallower channel has less energy, and begins to aggrade sediment. The channel fills in point bars and the Floodplain reforms at a new base level.
Channels have been observed to pass through 5 to 7 evolution types. This is one concept that you will be exposed to later in the FGM Module.
